1. Main structure
The main structure of the drilling platform consists of the hull, bridge, lifting system, horizontal stability system, power distribution and control system, etc.
The hull is the foundation of the drilling platform and carries all the loads of the drilling platform. The bridge is a bridge connecting the hull and the derrick, supporting and transmitting the derrick load. The lifting system is mainly used to realize the lifting and positioning operations of the derrick. The horizontal stability system is one of the key equipment to ensure the stability of the drilling platform at sea. The power distribution and control system is responsible for the power supply, control and monitoring of the drilling platform.
2. Derrick structure
The derrick structure is the most important part of the drilling platform. Drilling equipment is installed on the derrick, and the drill rod is sent into the well through the derrick for drilling operations.
The derrick structure consists of columns, beams, diagonal braces, suspension bridges, guardrails, platforms and floors, which cooperate with each other to complete the drilling operation. Among them, the column is the key part of the support derrick, requiring high material strength and strong wind load resistance, and also meeting the requirements of construction and transportation. Beams and diagonal braces are structures to strengthen and stabilize the columns.
The suspension bridge is a horizontal bridge connecting the columns, responsible for carrying personnel and materials. The guardrail and platform are responsible for ensuring the safety of personnel, and can also facilitate personnel to operate and maintain equipment. The floor provides more convenient functions such as on-site management and data training.
3. Drilling equipment
Drilling equipment is the core part of the drilling platform, including drilling rigs, drill pipes, drill bits, logging equipment, mud circulation equipment, etc. The drilling rig is the main equipment for completing drilling operations, and can complete different drilling operations according to different configurations and requirements. The drill pipe is an important part of connecting the drill bit and the drilling rig.
The drill bit is a key tool for drilling and one of the bases for formulating drilling plans. Logging equipment and mud circulation equipment can accurately measure and monitor the downhole status to ensure the smooth progress of drilling operations.
4. Auxiliary facilities
In addition to the above-mentioned main parts and drilling equipment, the drilling platform is also equipped with a series of auxiliary facilities, including living areas, power supply equipment, sanitary equipment, canteens, warehouses, offices, etc. These facilities can provide the necessary living and working conditions for the staff of the drilling platform and ensure the safety and work efficiency of the staff.

In the development of marine oil and gas resources, there is a kind of equipment that can be said to have made an indispensable contribution, that is, the offshore drilling platform. Marine drilling platforms usually include bottom-mounted platforms, jack-up platforms, drilling ships, FPSOs, semi-submersible platforms, jacket platforms, concrete gravity platforms, deep-water compliant tower platforms, etc. In order to meet the needs of deep-water drilling and development, deep-water compliant platforms such as tension leg platforms (TLP) and single column platforms (SPAR) have emerged.

Among them, shallow-water drilling platforms currently mainly include jacket platforms (fixed) and jack-up platforms (mobile). The maximum operating water depth of the jacket platform can reach four or five hundred meters, but when the location of the oil field changes, the platform’s adaptability is insufficient. Jack-up platforms have become the most widely used platforms because they can flexibly squat and stand in sea areas within a depth of 200 meters and have good stability.
Jack-up drilling platforms are composed of platforms, pile legs and lifting mechanisms. The platform can be lifted and lowered along the pile legs and generally has no self-propulsion capability. During operation, the pile legs are lowered and inserted into the seabed, the platform is lifted to a safe working height away from the sea surface, and the pile legs are pre-pressed to ensure that the pile legs do not sink when the platform encounters a storm. After the well is completed, the platform is lowered to the sea surface, the pile legs are pulled out and lifted up completely, the entire platform floats on the sea surface, and is towed to a new well site by a tugboat.
Working steps of self-elevating offshore platform
The self-elevating drilling platform consists of three parts: drilling module, hull module, and lifting module. The drilling module is composed of various operating machinery; the hull module is similar to a barge, which is used to carry the drilling module and living facilities. The lifting module is mainly responsible for the lifting and lowering of the platform, usually also called the lifting system, and its core component is the pile legs.
In layman’s terms, a self-elevating drilling platform is a functional platform with self-elevation capabilities. It achieves height changes through pile legs of a certain length that can be lifted and lowered by itself to adapt to the requirements of different operating water depths.
Composition of a lifting offshore platform
When the operating water depth increases, the result is that the size, length and mass of the pile legs increase rapidly, making the stability of drilling operations and platform towing worse. Therefore, the operating water depth is the bottleneck of the jack-up drilling platform. At present, its operating range is limited to within 200m water depth of the continental shelf.
Due to the use of less steel, low cost and high stability, the jack-up offshore platform still has unparalleled advantages over other platforms.
The jack-up offshore platform is lifted and lowered by a complete set of lifting systems. Common lifting systems include rack and pinion lifting systems and hydraulic latch lifting systems. Among them, the most used is the rack and pinion lifting system.
The rack and pinion lifting system is to set two racks on each pile leg of the drilling platform, and a number of pairs of pinions are set on each rack. The power is driven by the pile side motor to drive the gear reducer, and then transmitted to the pinion meshing with the rack, thereby driving the platform to lift and lower.
Rack and pinion lifting device
Compared with lifting systems such as hydraulic latches, the rack and pinion lifting system has a lower cost. More importantly, the rack and pinion type can achieve continuous lifting, fast speed, and flexible operation. In a complex and changeable marine environment, the platform can be lifted and lowered quickly, which means it is safer.
If the pile legs are the long legs of the offshore drilling platform, then the rack is the skeleton. The long legs can move freely thanks to the support of the steel and iron bones.
For self-elevating offshore platforms, the performance of the pile legs determines the safety and service life of the platform, and the ultra-thick rack steel plate is the key material for manufacturing the platform pile legs.
